WHAT NOT TO DO FOR SEO: PART 10

What’s with all these people and their smart phones? Yeah, I’m looking at you.

Over the last couple of years, the amount of people using their phones to browse the web has sky rocketed. The first thing most business owners are saying is, “we need a mobile website!” They’re only partially right. The thing that they’re missing is that when you have a mobile website, one of the ways to do this is to deliberately create duplicate content. Bad news for Google, remember? What happens is many people with sites will have a mobile site built and all of the pages have exactly the same words on it. They don’t remember to let Google know not to count those pages, so you essentially duplicate your site instantly. Oops.

At Red Rocket, we like to think we’re doing something a lot of people still haven’t caught onto yet. It’s called responsive design. We like to pay attention when Google says to do something. One of the latest things they’re saying is exactly what I’ve just described: don’t direct your user to a “mobile version” of your site; give them the same website, just on a different device!

That’s all for now!
