Healthy Workplace: More Ergonomics Tips

Last week we talked about some tips to make your work life a little more ergonomically friendly.  Here are a few more ergonomics tips:

  1.  The 20-20-20 rule:  This rule works two ways.  To reduce eye strain you should look away from your computer every 20 minutes.  You should focus on something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The New York Times suggests a twist on this rule that applies to sitting.  Every 20 minutes, walk at least 20 feet away from your desk for at least 20 seconds.  This rule is nice because it is easy to remember.  Just set a reminder in your calendar or on your phone, since often times 20 minutes can fly by.
  2. Posture:  Don’t cross your legs.  Keep your feet firmly on the ground with knees at a 90 degree angle. This will help you not to slouch. Also, try to keep your neck, back and heels all in alignment.  Elbows should also be at 90 degrees when using the keyboard and mouse.
  3. Work Station:  Keep all frequently used items within easy reach so you aren’t frequently bending and straining.  Your monitor should be positioned directly in front of you.  Position your monitor so that the top of the monitor is at eye level. And, remember that your monitor should be positioned 20 to 40 inches away from you.
