Perhaps even worse than that are the multiple 1-star reviews that pop up within hours or even minutes of each other. Frequently, these reviews have no text, or the text doesn’t explain what actually went wrong, only the reviewer’s anger and frustration with the business in question. Whatever the type of malicious review, enough of this untrue, unwarranted negative press can do incalculable harm to your online presence. So what can be done to prevent and/or mitigate the damage?

If you do encounter a negative review, be sure to determine if it is a legitimate complaint or a malicious attack. Either way, respond professionally and promptly to the criticism. Overreacting will only do more harm to your business’ reputation. Also, be sure to flag the review as inappropriate, and reach out to the Google Small Business support team. Be sure that your case is solid when you inform them that the review is fake. For example, why is it a fake review? Which Google policy does it violate? What evidence backs up your claim? In many cases, Google will remove fake reviews that have been a thorn in your side. In certain cases, you may even want to publicly expose the review as fake. Sometimes customers will rally to support you, and that negative review will turn into a positive for your company!
