Competitive Analysis: Who hasn’t installed the Alexa Toolbar yet?

If you haven’t you need to…NOW.  I’ve been using the Alexa Toolbar now for the past few years and it’s invaluable as you surf the Web.  For those of you who don’t know what it is, let me explain. This tool offers their toolbar for free.  All you have to do is download and install it from their site.  As soon as you do, you’ll begin seeing a small graph at the bottom of your web browser displaying a number, generally anywhere from 1 to 40,000,000.  The number represents how popular a website is.

A ranking of “1” would mean that the site is the most popular site on the Web. Yahoo has that coveted position. Google ranks #2. Generally sites that have rankings over 1,000,000 receive little, if any traffic each day.

You can instantly “spy” on your competition and see if they’re utilizing the Web for their business.  Or, in the case of a web development company, you can see if they’re any good at promoting their own site.  I love having the ability to see if the competition is really the competition or not.  Generally what I find is that those who I think are the big boys, generally have horrible Alexa rankings.

Now go install it for yourself.
